Heeding the Call: A Status Report on the White House OSTP Public-Access Guidance and an Overview of Open Scholarship Tools and Platforms Available for Use by UMD Researchers

This panel presentation will include the latest news about federal agencies’ responses to the OSTP’s “Nelson Memo” on public access to research publications and data and will include a practical overview of open scholarship tools and platforms that UMD researchers may wish to use now, including the Open Science Framework, DataCite, GitHub, Dryad, QDR, DRUM, and preprint repositories like SocArXiv.

This online workshop is part of a series of webinars commemorating the OSTP’s Year of Open Science, and is sponsored by UMD PACT and UMD Libraries. 

Panelists:

Dr. Gregory F. Ball is the vice president for research for the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), overseeing a joint research enterprise that ranks among the top 10 public institutions in research expenditures, and which garners $1.3 billion in research awards annually.

Dr. Philip N. Cohen is a professor of sociology at UMD. He is the founding director of SocArXiv, an open archive for the social sciences, and an advocate for open science in the research community.

Dr. Martin Halbert (featured speaker) is a science advisor for public access at the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Terry Owen is the Scholarly Communications Librarian at the University of Maryland Libraries. One of his primary responsibilities is managing the university's digital repository, DRUM (Digital Repository at the University of Maryland) available at drum.lib.umd.edu.

Sarah Weiss is a STEM and Open Science librarian at UMD. She is a passionate advocate for open research practices and serves as the UMD contact liaison for Open Science Framework.

Dr. Adriene Lim, Dean of Libraries, will be the host and moderator.
