The University of Maryland Libraries are pleased to announce that in collaboration with the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), we are extending our open access agreement with Wiley, one of the world’s largest publishers and a leader in research and education.
As of January 1, 2023, UMD faculty, staff, and students have full access to read and publish in Wiley’s full portfolio of journals at no cost. Additionally, UMD corresponding authors pay no charge to publish articles as open access; articles become open access immediately upon publication with no embargo; and there are no caps or limits on how many articles UMD authors can publish under this agreement. Authors will also maintain rights to their own work under a Creative Commons license.
This new agreement expands on the one year pilot program announced last year, which only covered publishing articles in Wiley hybrid journals. This new agreement includes Wiley’s entire catalog of journals, including gold open access journals, and Hindawi’s gold open access portfolio.
“This deal with Wiley is one of the most impactful programs that the Libraries will offer to our university community this year,” says Daniel Mack, Associate Dean of Libraries for Collection Strategies and Services. “These open access articles will be freely accessible to the whole world—not hidden behind a paywall.”
This extension comes after the agreement piloted last year between Wiley and BTAA produced 2,400 new articles published open access, an increase from 19% open access articles from Big Ten authors to over 65% in just one year.
This partnership between Wiley and BTAA will advance the goals of the BTAA BIG Collection, a historic commitment to manage the separate collections of the Big Ten university libraries as a single collection. to move toward a more sustainable open scholarship ecosystem.
