Elaine Westbrooks, Vice Provost Libraries, UNC Chapel Hill joined this online meeting. She gave an overview of activities at UNC Chapel Hill since her start date of August 2017.
Meetings were held with UNC undergrads, graduate students, faculty, the fundraising board, faculty board members, and campus administration with a focus on transparency. The faculty Library board (a diverse advisory group made a big impact) was pivotal.
These meetings revealed the need to inform/educate groups on:
- Understanding the term “open access” including addressing issues related to publishing in OA journals and promotion/tenure
- Building awareness of the economics of publishing - e.g. what happens when a society sells a journal to a major publisher?
Furthermore, a website was created at https://sustainablescholarship.unc.edu/ highlighting four commitments: to make scholarship more affordable, sustainable, transparent, open.
